Mining environmental liabilities

A research project that looks at mining environmental liabilities in Chile, Argentina, and Peru

This research project seeks to deepen the understanding of mining environmental liabilities in Chile, Argentina, and Peru from a social perspective. Its objectives include identifying existing governance frameworks, mapping key stakeholders, and evaluating how these systems operate. Although these liabilities originated in the past, their social and environmental impacts persist today, and inadequate management can pose significant risks to both current and future communities and ecosystems. In the context of the global energy transition, where demand for minerals such as copper and lithium is rapidly increasing, it is crucial to examine the legacies of mining. By advancing knowledge on this issue, the project aims to inform and improve the design and implementation of public policies and private initiatives that address these enduring challenges. The project is developed within the core research agenda of the Centre for International Studies, School of Politics and Government, National University of San Martin (UNSAM), Argentina.
